In 1964, Hauge et al. first reported the existence of PQQ (CAS: 72909-34-3) while studying bacterial glucose dehydrogenase; it is another coenzyme of glucose dehydrogenase. In 1979, its molecular structure was successfully determined using techniques such as mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and it was named pyrroloquinoline quinone, an aromatic ortho-quinone compound. It appears reddish-brown, is easily soluble in water, and readily decomposes under light. PQQ is widely found in various common foods in nature, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, and beverages, including natto, parsley, green tea, green peppers, kiwifruit, and papaya.
